HYPERHIDROSIS
HORROR STORIES
HYPERHIDROSIS is a horror story in itself. Read this shocking
hyperhidrosis surgery horror story and beware of this surgery.
You may
wish to post some of this on your site so people can know
that there are some real problems with surgeries for hyperhidrosis.
I have requested the FDA, Health and Human Service as well
as the Medical Board in California to set up better guidelines
and trained physicians. Thanks. It appears that the FDA has
approved sympathectomies for hyperhidrosis > (excessive sweating).
In my case, I went to Stanford in California, told the doctors
there that I had really, cold clammy hands that basically
sweated constantly and would like to get addressed if possible
as it was really a pain in the neck. They said that they could
do a sympathectomy, I would have a minor scar, might possibly
sweat a little more under the arms, but that the hands would
be warm and dry. So I did the procedures. Much to my alarm,
what they did do was sever the sympathetic nerves destroying
the ganglia at T-2, T-3, and T-4 which means that one cannot
possibly sweat from the nipple line up which is something
that we NEVER even talked about. In doing that, it made the
underlying systemic illness that I have go absolutely beserk
in that I have total, complete body sweats practically every
minute of every day, dramatically raised surface body temperature,
horrific amounts of heat radiating off the body, horrible
hot flashes, sores everywhere from either being to dry or
to wet. I had to go on disablility, file for social security
benefits and just spend tons of time and money trying to "fix"
this. So I am now living with a life-long disability in that
I simply cannot function to any degree of comfort completely
affecting my health on every level. . I have to have fans,
the air-conditioner running all the time, pack my body in
ice and have a really, really hard time just doing anything.
In any event, my concern is that now I see on the internet
that there are dozens of sites of doctors doing surgeries
for hyperhidrosis. They make it sound as if it is a simple
surgery with a minimal amount of side-effects and a "cure".
The second thing is that it appears that one doctor does the
procedure this way cutting only T-2; others do only clamping
on the way through the top of the sympathetic system; others
cut all the nerves even down to T-5 then they talk about "kuntz"
nerves which some doctors say don't even exist. I get e-mails
from all over the world now in which people's lives have been
completely destroyed by these procedures as there are so many
god-awful, overwhelming side-effects. I fear that there is
a large number of patients who have had horrible, horrible
side-effects to this type of operation, and it is not being
addressed/repported by the medical community back to the FDA
or the correct governing agencies. These surgeries MUST BE
better regulated as they are now DESTROYING the health of
many people especially as more and more doctors do them. In
the past, insurance did not cover these operation; now, however,
most insurance will so that is going to increase the number
of persons who are going to have serious problems. One can
see some of the motivation as the prices for these procedures
are listed on most of the websites as if one was buying a
car or something so I think part of it now is the money making
more people jump on the bandwagon. IT IS VITAL to me that
I see that no one is permanently disabled by these procedures.
The FDA must step-in, re-evaluate what is happening on this
issue and present new guidelines addressing the potential
number of patients that these procedures could harm forever.
It appears that a group of individuals can tolerate this surgery;
however, I know now from my own experience and that of others
that some are DESTROYED by it. I am not kidding. The level
of misery involved, its impact on my life and those around
me is MONUMENTAL, really. One's entire body is adversely affected
beyond belief; I don't even believe this, and I have to go
through it every day. Please advise me @ mikeeb79@ prodigy.net
as to whom I can talk to, give more information to help make
a change on this problem. > Thank you. M.B. This is my post
on the internet: I had sympathectomies for hyperhidrosis in
1989 at Stanford. At the time, I had only discussed with the
doctors that I had very cold, clammy, sweating hands and would
like to change that. They agreed that I did and that by doing
a sympathectomy I could have some relief from this uncomfortable
and embarrassing condition. So I went and had these procedures
done. Unfortunately, they never discussed with me that the
basic intent of these surgeries is to completely block any
sweating from the nipple line up. I did not want that much
done as this condition really never affected my face that
much, and I would have been quite concerned as to where all
that perspiration would go when you exercise or when it gets
hot, humid, etc. and how to be > that dry would feel like.
But they did it anyway. I am to this day not sure why because
as mentioned, I simply didn't have that level of problem.
After I asked, they said that I had misunderstood and this
'part of your condition'. I didn't misunderstand nor was this
really part of my 'condition'; we simply never discussed it
at all. After I complained further, they said that in the
first place, I wasn't that bad and what an idiot I had been
for putting myself in this position. And where did I have
to go to get this surgery in the first place as not many physicians
do it and what an ungrateful bastard I was. (Really, I am
not kidding. They said this!!!) In any event, after the surgeries,
my surface body temperature was raised quite dramatically.
It feels like just waves of heat emanating off the body. If
one had a thermal image device, I am quite sure you could
see huge red waves of heat coming-off. Other people can feel
the heat. Also, my ENTIRE body just drips in sweat - the chest,
the back, the legs, the groin. Furthermore, this intensifies
with any movement or heat from the surrounding environment.
Just to like run the vacuum for ten minutes or so, I am covered
in sweat everywhere to give you an idea, and it has been close
to twelve years!! This sweating phenomenon really has not
diminised. I have to keep the air conditioning on or fans
running all the time and keep perfectly still just to keep
from being covered in sweat and to feel comfortable for a
few minutes. Also, I have horrible hot flashes the run the
length of my body. I can feel the sympathetic nerves as they
run down my butt and legs. The nerves there got so hot that
I have scars in the groin area from this. I have to pack my
chest and groin in ice just to get some relief from the heat
and sweat. I have sores all over my face and hands as now
they are terribly dry. No lotion or potion or anything helps
to get some relief. I have arthritis in both hands, am > pretty
much impotent from the dramatic change in body sensations
and this horrible heat sensation. A lot of the time, my hands
are colder and clammier than they ever were as there is no
neural control there at all. As far as being embarrassing,
I have huge sweat stains just about everywhere all day long.
I have to wear a shirt over another shirt just to cover that
up which makes me all that much hotter. I have to work in
an office with the air conditioning blasting just to keep
this problem under control. If you were to take your clothes
out of the wash and put them on directly, this is about what
it is all the time. Very wet and immensely uncomfortable.
I have caught flu after flu and cold after cold as my chest
is almost always bathed in sweat. This is a most unnatural
sweat too. It just pumps out at an incredible rate and leaves
basically like welts > behind. Really awful! I have had people
come up to me and call me gross, thought I was having a heart
> attack or something as it so terribly apparent. You cannot
hide this if you get compensatory hyperhidrosis on this level.
I think that there are several people who wish to God that
they had never heard of these> surgeries. As I understand
it, there are a whole group who have tried to have these procedures
reversed > with a nerve graft or waiting to have that done.
What else? Oh yes, I had to go on disability, could not work
for a couple of years, had to get lawyers, and get real nasty
to get these doctors to understand what could happen to some
patients by doing this. So are you still thinking of doing
these surgeries??? You may wish to really reconsider!! Once
the nerves are messed with, you run the risks of what I (and
many others) have gone through. There really is no reliable
way to "fix" it afterward either. So I wouldn't believe everything
you see on these physicians' websites. I know that many people
are happy; however, many have to deal with a mess far greater
than they had to start with. When I inquired about some items
with some doctors, I got an answer with a quoted price list
for this and for that. So it leaves one to wonder what the
primary motivation is! I would think about that as well! Just
please, please be so terribly careful with this!!!!!! DOCTORS
